The annual review meeting of the CSL – Center for Carbonate Research will be held October 15-16, 2012 in Miami at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science on Virginia Key.  During the annual review, we will report on the projects that we outlined in the prospectus.
This year’s post-meeting fieldtrip will be to the reefal systems in the Dominican Republic.

We will reserve a block of rooms for the nights of October 14th & 15th at the University of Miami rate of $149.00/night at the Sonesta Bayfront Hotel Coconut Grove, 2889 McFarlane Rd, Coconut Grove 33133. Details for the reservations will be follow shortly.

The meeting will begin at 8:30 AM on Monday, October 15th in the seminar room at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway.  The review meeting will end around noon on Tuesday, October 16th.

CORE WORKSHOP
Afternoon, October 16, 2012

A core workshop from the prograding reefal successions in the Dominican Republic will be held in the afternoon in the SLAB seminar room.

FIELD TRIP TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
October 16 - 19, 2012
 
This field seminar will examine three settings in which reefs play a prominent role as hydrocarbon reservoir facies: in the mixed carbonate-siliciclastic environment, in the platform environment, and as shelf margin deposits.

The trip will start in the Miocene mixed deposits of the Cibao Basin with a walking transect along the Gurabo River to examine the succession of reef deposits during a complete sea level cycle.  The transect through the progradational sequence will examine the progressive shallowing from forereef facies through topset beds.

The platform setting will be examined in a series of road cuts along a recently completed highway that dissects a Miocene platform equivalent in age to the mixed system.  The Los Haitises Platform is a heavily karstified platform, exhibiting many of the common features of equatorial carbonate deposits subjected to tropical climate and weathering.

From the platform setting we will examine the Pliocene/Pleistocene shelf edge reef deposits along the south coast of the Dominican Republic near Boca Chica.  These terraced carbonates provide an excellent example of the geometries, facies, and early diagenetic alterations of shelf edge reef systems.  We are currently studying this age-progressive suite of reef deposits to assess the influence of repeated marine and meteoric diagenesis on the development of early porosity, permeability, and petrophysical properties.

The cost of the trip is $1,700.  This includes all accommodations, meals, ground transportation, guidebook, and local fees.  Participants will be responsible for arranging their own air transport (we recommend departing on American Airlines flight no. 1479 to Santiago on Tuesday, October 16, and returning to Miami on American Airlines flight no. 1138 from Santo Domingo on Friday, October 19.)
